URGENT: Vegan prisoner being starved–you can help!

by Dylan Mulenberg

I was recently informed that Daniel Wilson, a Vegan activist and prisoner, is not being given adequate Vegan food.

Daniel is a political prisoner in Washington that was jailed as an Olympia mayday arrestee. He was jailed for nothing more than using his first amendment right while protesting.  The jail has been starving him for over 20 days, and he has lost over 20 pounds in that time. Please ask the jail to provide Daniel with adequate Vegan food.

To contact the jail through a web form, go here and click “E-mail Contact”: http://www.co.thurston.wa.us/sheriff/contactus.htm

You can call the jail at 360-786-5510. Ideally call between 1:30PM and 4:30PM PST, but any time helps.

According to Break The Chains, “Daniel has requested that people do not stop calling the jail, but instead continue to flood the phone lines in hopes that the jail will cede to pressure.”

Please use the web form AND call.

Feel free to use this pre-written letter in the web form (written by Stacey Rakic), and be sure to sign your name (gives the letter more impact). Thanks!

To Whom It May Concern:

It is my understanding that Mr. Daniel Wilson, who is currently being held in the Thurston County Jail, is being denied an adequate vegan diet and has consequently suffered deteriorating physical health. I am therefore writing to request that Mr. Wilson be provided a vegan diet in accordance with his civil rights. Vegan diets exclude all animal products and bi-products including poultry, meat, fish, dairy, honey, and eggs.

You may be interested to know that the federal prison system incorporates vegan diets as the result of a federal judicial decision in June 2008 stipulating that denying vegan diets violates civil rights as mandated by the Federal Religious Bias Law. (New York Supreme Court Criminal Term Library June 29, 2008) Although not included in the federal prison system, the Thurston County Corrections Facility has the obligation to provide diverse diets in accordance with inmate rights; civil rights are not defined by borders or parameters and should thus be recognized in your facility. Offering prisoner dietary options does not entail agreement with or support of alleged offense but rather fulfills a commitment to observing and accepting fundamental civil rights. Please observe Mr. Wilson’s vegan diet and provide him food conforming to such.

I know your time is limited and I thank you for your attention to this issue.

I invite you to join the NIO blog network and take a stand for those imprisoned in labs.  Remember, if they could fight back, their tormentors would have expired long ago.  We have an obligation to expose the abusers.  It is the LEAST we can do!  I welcome your emails & look forward to adding your name to our team.
