Guide to Direct Action (legal or illegal)

  1. Be very careful that you can’t be identified.  Wear a ski mask (preferably black and only eye holes), plain clothing (long sleeves and long pants) with no logos, plain shoes (preferably not those you normally wear), and no jewelry or watches, etc. showing.
  2. Don’t wear clothes with tears, stains, etc. They can be used to identify you.
  3. Optionally wear knee and elbow pads in case you have to crawl a lot, especially if you are being chased by police. (i.e. if you have to crawl through a hole in a fence as a possible escape route) .
  4. Make sure your clothing, especially mask, fits securely and won’t slide down.
  5. Make sure that if you have long hair, it is under your mask.
  6. If you are not of the same skin color as most people in your area, don’t let yours skin be seen. Wear sunglasses, and preferable not the same style you normally wear.
  7. Wear electrician gloves. Sweat, containing DNA, can soak through cloth gloves.
  8. Don’t talk in range of any security camera that could pick up your voice if avoidable.
  9. Don’t bring a cell phone with you–the government can trace where a given cell phone is at a given time and trace you to the area that the action was carried out. They might also be able to track other electronic devices. I don’t know if it works with phones that are turned off, though it probably does, because they can be tapped when they’re off.
  10. Don’t let security cameras see you with your mask off and don’t let security cameras see what car you drive.
  11. Do not spray paint the ALF logo or in any other way affiliate yourself with an existing group. If you get caught, you will have a longer sentence and heavier fees simply because you are part of a “terrorist organization.”
  12. Don’t wear clothes with the ALF logo. Partly because they can be used to identify you if you are found in possession of them and partly because they link you to the ALF, giving you a longer sentence.
  13. If possible, keep actions to towns/areas that are not near your home.
  14. Do not talk about your actions to anyone who is not directly involved. What someone doesn’t know, they can’t tell tell the police.
  15. Do not talk about your actions to anyone after they have been carried out.
  16. When planning, do not talk in or near the home or vehicle of yourself or any other ARA, and do not have any cell phones or other electronic devices near you. Preferable be outside in the country far from anything human-made.
  17. If you buy supplies (mask, wire cutters, spray paint, superglue, etc.), buy everything at separate locations and pay with cash.
  18. Burn the receipts.
  19. Don’t leave suspicious items laying in your house or car. Keep your mask with other winter clothes, your wire cutters in the garage with other gardening type stuff (buy other tools if you have to, just to make it less suspicious!), put your glue in a drawer with scissors and other stuff, etc.
  20. Scout the area. Know the escape routes in case things go bad.
  21. Have a leader in case you need someone to make split second decisions.
  22. Peak around corners, etc. before you enter a room or hallway or pass by a room or hallway, even if you’re positive you’re the only one in the building. Caution is key.
  23. If you see someone, abandon the mission. It’s not worth getting caught to save a few animals when that means that you can’t save more in the future.
  24. Know the hours that the place is open, and be sure no one will be there. Keep in mind there will be janitors, etc. in off-hours.
  25. Do your actions at night, too late for many witnesses to be around to call the police, identify any evidence leading to you, etc. Preferably 2am-4am.
  26. If you use a camera and/or camcorder (which is not advised) don’t let it be caught on security cameras–it can be used to identify you. If you use more than one device, don’t put out any photos that your camcorder is visible in or vice versa, etc.
  27. If an animal who you are rescuing bites you, etc., be forgiving–obviously, the animals who are on factory farms, in labs, etc. have every right to hate and fear humans.
  28. Know your legal rights. Lots of great info on the ALF site.
  29. Know what to do in the case of grand jury.
  30. (This applies to the U.S. Not sure about international laws.) If the police, FBI, etc. come to their house, don’t let them in without a warrant.
  31. (This applies to the U.S. Not sure about international laws.) Do not talk to the police, FBI, etc. on the phone.
  32. Do not believe the police, FBI, etc. They will lie to you. They will say things like “We already have your friends, it’s only a matter of time before they reveal your involvement and then you’re in bigger trouble” or “If you don’t cooperate, your friend is getting a longer jail sentence.” They are experts at social engineering.
  33. They will also pretend that your friends betrayed you so that you turn on them. “So-and-so revealed your involvement. You have no reason to be loyal to him/her. Tell us all that he/she does.” They likely don’t even have proof that that friend of yours has any involvement with underground, or even that you do!
  34. The FBI is also known to hire agents who will pose as ARAs and gather information about underground activists. Be cautious. Be extremely careful of who you trust.
  35. I suggest reading all of the topics in the “Security” forum at the ALF forum. Also, look through the various articles on the site. It’s better to spend a few hours reading about your legal rights and security than to spend years in jail (not helping animals!).
  36. Be overly cautious. Caution is key. Be obsessively secure and make sure there is no one around when you carry out actions.
  37. Don’t get caught. If there is a high chance of being caught, don’t take the risk–you’ll do the animals no good if you’re sitting in jail!

From the Animal Liberation Front: Finding People to Work With

One of the most important steps towards getting involved in direct action is finding people to work with. In any ALF action you are putting your freedom on the line, so you must be positive you can completely trust the people you are working with. It is essential to find people who will not sell out you or the movement should an arrest occur. You should always work with people who you know well and have for a long period of time, people who you know you can rely on. Security is an important issue in direct action, so people with a tendency to brag or who won’t be able to keep their mouth shut are a bad idea. Starting your own cell is better than joining an existing one, since if you know of an existing one, their security obviously isn’t too good. Asking someone if they want to get involved is never an easy thing to do. Bring up the subject in a general way and see how the person feels about direct action first, and move on from there. Cells usually consist of 2 to 5 members. Use the minimum number of people needed for each action, but don’t forget the importance of look outs. Having extra people unnecessarily puts them at risk. One person should be chosen as the leader of the group. This doesn’t mean that person has any special power or privileges, and it often wont come into play at all. But if during an actions things go wrong, someone will need to make split second decisions, and in this case there is no time for democracy. Progress as a group, starting with minor actions to get used to each other, discussing after each action what went well and what didn’t, and discussing how to improve and hit harder.

From the Animal Liberation Front: Are You Ready for the ALF?

Direct action is nothing to take lightly. The moment you carry out your first action you are at risk of being arrested. Direct action is very demanding, physically and mentally. Are you in top physical shape? If you were being chased by a police officer, could you outrun him? Could you scale a barbed wire fence? Living under the constant stress of possible arrest can take its toll mentally as well. ALF activists should also remain drug and alcohol free, as these things decay physical and mental ability, give the police another reason to investigate you, and waste money better spent on supplies. Veganism is obviously encouraged, as it is both morally responsible, and will better your physical condition. Some ALF members will also limit their association with mainstream animal rights groups, as to remain less visible to police investigations.

If you plan to get involved with the Animal Liberation movement, re-read this guide. Read it 10 more times. Read every article on the ALF site. Re-read the good articles. Re-re-read the good articles. Read the best articles 10 more times. It’s better to spend a few hours reading and memorizing (or even a week of solid research!) than to spend years in jail!

(Note that people have been arrested for above-ground protesting, so this information will be helpful to all Animal Rights Activists, whether they fight for Animal Rights through legal or illegal means.)

Your wasting your time and everyone elses Santanachia, you’ll only entrap the terminally stupid like that. You coppers couldn’t find your asses with both hands a flashlight and a roadmap. We’re above ground and within the law.

I’m just saying it could happen and I don’t think you kids know what you could be getting into. my comments have brought disscusion and hopefully broadened your thoughts on the matter. Sorry if I pissed you off

I am a meat eating atheist and I do think that under certain cercumstances it is ok to kill and tourter people so long as there is a means to an end. As a soldiers I have been in such situations and don’t regret it the least. If everyone on the planet went straight vegan today there would not be enough food to support us all. Also with out the taxes placed on rifles and hunters there wouldn’t be half as many wild critters running around the states

  6. New guide, much longer, more in-depth, and overall better, coming soon, hopefully this month. :)
